Babywearing is Green! Is 'babywearing' a green practice? Every month, every pregnancy and magazine features the 'Essential Buys for your Baby'. Pages are filled with the things you absolutely 'need' to buy for your baby. We are led to believe that no self-respecting mom would dream of giving birth without a long list of expensive baby gear with a fancy stroller at the top of the list. Do we actually need all these things for our babies? The answer is probably no. We do need a safe car seat and, no doubt, we need a baby carrier. 'Babywearing' is not just beneficial for babies and parents, it is also a more eco-friendly way of looking after our babies. With a baby carrier, you don't need a pram and a stroller. Prams and strollers are all but green. They are heavy and bulky to the point where you may need a car with a bigger trunk while a baby carrier will fold up and fit in your purse. With your baby safely tucked in the baby sling, you can continue to use public transport where using a stroller would be cumbersome and almost impossible. Baby will often fall asleep with the humming of the bus or train's engine. Even if you do use a stroller, and it is at time very convenient to have a baby carrier and a stroller handy, using your baby carrier most of the time means your stroller will last longer and can be used by several children without the need to replace it. You also won't need as many toys and gear to keep your baby entertained and distracted. Real life: preparing food (safely), playing, tidying up, meeting friends, sewing, using the computer are all activities that you can do with your baby. Observing you and the world around you will keep your baby entertained for hours. Baby carriers come in a wide range of organic and sustainable fabrics.
