You can tuck it entirely into the body of the carrier when not in use. Stuff a burp cloth into the pocket for newborn head padding, or pull the hood halfway out for a soft headrest/collar. I had the opportunity to try out this new hood design recently at the International Babywearing Conference in Chicago and I loved it! I liked the look when it was hidden away and when my baby fell asleep it was easy to pull out and attach at the straps to secure that little head!
